There were enough 'Ifs' that they would disable a Dyson if they were dust motes.

Wanting more than given is the sole purpose of reading or writing mysteries; how else do we learn to fire our synaptic function into something resembling imagination when faced with the Unknown (despite Its intimacy)?

Where did the steak sanga originate? (san-ga: Aussie for Sandwich).
Was Cogan's prospective lover (whether male or female)—if that’s an angle—the smoker?
Did this prospective root do a runner after Cogan lit them up and then carked it on a piece of flavourful “micky meat?”

At the very least you haven't (in all my years as a "Constant Reader") taken away our imagination by describing the 'bare-assed' graphical nature of a deed as Edward Lee or Chuck Palahnuik would.

...these, and many other questions were purposely not answered as King has said-he wanted the CR to make up their own minds-and not necessarily come to the same conclusions...

lol... I wondered where the steak came from too. I don't think it had been all that long since he ate the fish and chips.

My first thought regarding the cigarettes was that he had bought the pack for someone else.

As a cop, that was the FIRST question I had. Focusing on the fish and chips basket as a method to ID him, in a coastal town? Talk about a long shot, compared to "Where could a stranger get steak at midnight around here?"

The answer to that question could open up a LOT of possibilities!
