I've never seen a movie that has two versions of endings. I like the one where he dies, no idea why. Although I couldn't watch it more than once bc I know someone who died in a fire. I have the movie with the ending where he lives but it seemed boring by comparison to the one where he dies.
Richard, my daughter's godfather, does movies for a living but he's always been part of the crew (he's the director of photography & the camera operator, he does Indie films) and he does mostly documentaries. He won an award for the documentary he showed me and I can see why. It's the only time I've ever had such an intense emotional response to any movie ever.
He doesn't have any idea why they have two endings for 1408. He never reads Stephen King or watches his movies unless he's with me; we watched 11/22/63 on Hulu, and his only comment was to applaud the work of David Katznelson, the DP in the first episode.
I've also never read 1408. It's the only one of his I haven't read so I don't know which ending was in the book. I couldn't read any of the stories after the first one in Everything's Eventual.

There's been a few movies that, once released on dvd and/or bluray, will have a different ending in with the 'extra's'. Sometimes they film two endings and show each of them to test audiences to see which will get the best response. Heck, even Casablanca had a different ending filmed in which he got the girl, but the ending that we all see is the one that brought the tears to the audiences eyes, so they kept that one.

1408 (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: In addition to the ending that appears in the theatrical release version, three other endings were shot. None of the four endings match the ending of King's original short story.

I think the movie Blade Runner, had two different endings, the one where he drives away, and the one, I think, where he dreams of the unicorn. I think there was another, when they had the completed film and screen-tested it front of an audience, and showed the two versions of the end and went with the one the audience liked. I think I remember listening to the audio commentary to the movie, Christine, and I don't know who said it, but I think they thought of doing two endings.

I think they often have two endings after they have a screen audience test and they get feedback letting the makers know what they like. I don't like how the kid dies in Cujo ( I think he dies in the movie as well). I'm not sure if they made two versions of the end for Cujo the movie.

The Trent kid survives in the movie but dies in the book. Personally I think if movies are adapted from a book they should be followed "to the book" Why there are always changes I don't know??

I hated the ending where he dies. The slasher ghost in the back of the managers car was stupid to me ...like why would he be haunted at the gravesite but not in the hotel where he works In the same building as the room?

Anyway I was pleasantly surprised that Inliked the movie even though it was really nothing like the story. One of those rare occasions where the movie was just as good as the story
