I found a dvd of Needful Things at Goodwill and snatched it up! Haven't seen it since it was originally released in the theaters (which was the longer version) so am excited to watch it again. I hope they will release the extended version on bluray soon!

I had no idea there was a three hour cut. But according to IMDb the longer cut was for tv, not theatre:

Needful Things (1993) - Technical Specifications - IMDb

It's a movie (and book) that can use a longer cut, so I suppose it's an improvement? Alternative cuts of older movies very seldom make it to blu-ray/dvd though. I'd love to see the theatrical version of Salem's Lot, even though Hooper prefers the longer version - I saw an alternative scene on Youtube and it was not a huge difference, but I like to see how it plays differently in a shorter version. I've given up hope to ever see it though.

Another factor for getting extended cuts, sometimes it depends on who has the rights. I remember a few years ago the 1991 Dark Shadows was released on DVD by MGM. It was just the broadcast versions of the episodes. But on the MPI home videos for the first and last episodes, there were extended scenes added. They have never been released on DVD to my direct knowledge.

I suppose it also has to do with the popularity of a film. I have a Blade Runner with, like, five different cuts I think. For such a wellknown film from a wellknown director it's no problem.
They sometimes also appear in certain regions only, like the Watchmen Ultimate Cut which never appeared here unfortunately.

I actually have the Dark Shadows revival on dvd. Don't know if it includes extended scenes, but I think it may. I liked it a lot, but then I tried to watch some of the original series on Youtube and I found it terribly slow.

Sometimes different cuts can be a real revelation. The American remake of The Grudge (with Sarah Michelle Gellar) is only a couple of minutes longer in the director's cut, but it makes the film much better.
Also sometimes entirely new (sub)plots appear which were cut out and things which didn't have much meaning originally make much more sense suddenly.

I enjoy the Dark Shadows revival myself. Ive only seen a few episodes of the original, I don't mind it, but I still prefer the new one.

I completely agree with what you said about different cuts. The biggest different cut version I can think of I enjoy to a certain extent is the Highlander 2 renegade cut. Grant it, the movie still stinks to high heaven, but atleast the renegade version makes better sense.

The extended version of Fried Green Tomatoes has an added scene that totally changes one of the characters. In the theatrical version it made me not like one of the characters but after seeing the extended version on dvd my mind was completely changed.

I watched from the beginning. It was on YouTube, maybe still is. The episodes are short, but after a while I lost interest - it is very simply made on small sets and it seemed to endlessly circle around things but never get to the point.
The show was very popular at the time though in the US - it was not ever released outside the US, or at least not widely, so it remained unknown mostly in Europe until the Tim Burton film.
What I understand about it (but American users of the board will probably know this better) is that it became only truly popular once Barnabas entered, who is not in it from the beginning - so it may be a case of just sticking with it. I don't think all episodes are on YouTube though, although YouTube content is constantly changing of course.

The revival I liked a lot though.
