Took the grandkids to Rocky Mountain National Park today. Wanted to check out the changing aspen, see if we could find some elk, and maybe hear some bugling, since it's the Season of Love at the moment for them.

Some of the aspen were very nice, but there weren't the veins running across the mountainsides that help make it so pretty.

We heard a little bugling, which was nice, because we weren't really there at the right time of day for it.

And we saw a few.

Generally, we would see a bull with his harem and some yearlings. This guy sits apart from the ladies, who are enjoying the shade.

Took another one to show the changing aspen in the background.

The camouflage can be amazing. I've actually enhanced this picture to make the 12-point bull in the lower, slightly right side of the picture more visible. From where we were, he looked like a rock and tree branches.

A big ol' bull with no ladies to call his own, his loneliness reflected in the sole tree in the meadow, while the peaks and storm clouds loom with their own sense of intimidation. There's always next year, buddy.

And then after a bit, we ended up getting a bit closer.

This younger guy was off by himself, grazing. As was this next bull:

He's just placidly chewing his cud, if elk are cud chewers, but I'm pretty sure they are.

We had a great time.

Those really are phenomenal photos! A mama deer and her baby have hung around near our house the last few months but they are never close enough to get a good picture. They are so sweet. The baby plays and scampers off but mama is very protective and never lets the baby get more than like 50 feet away before she moves closer.

Love this thread Scott! And it doesn't deserve to be on the third page of the forum ;;D The photos you posted early on are excellent - darkly gothic, and the sort of thing that I would photograph. Question - do you post your photos on any other site? I tried things like Flickr and photo bucket for a while but have now settled for the mind-blowing predictability of Instagram ....oh dear, there is no hope for me.

Anyway! I thought I'd join in and share with you my picture of the fabulous Basilica in Fremantle :0:

We're right at that tipping point between peak color and not quite there yet but leaves are going to start falling off the trees soon so didn't want to wait and this may be our last day of sun for a while. These are for those of you who would like to be able to see the changing autumn colors. Quality isn't that great as they're taken with my phone but gives you a decent representation.
