But would you wait in light overnight to do so? The starstruck part really refers to those who go to extremes to meet a celebrity.

I'm not starstruck over the guy. I would just really like the chance to be up close with him, say thank you and all that. The overnight part just gives me the best guarantee of being able to do that.

King only does speaking engagements in this area every few years, and how often does he do actual signings? One night of waiting is worth it for the memory.

8 pm??? Earlier? That's just insane, and it doesn't make any sense. You plan on camping out before they even close? I don't even think that's allowed, it's loitering and their security is picky.

I wouldnt go before they close. Guess it depends how many people I see online when I get there. Never been to a signing so not sure what to expect.

As long as you don't act like a raving nut case and get arrested for disturbing the peace (kidding of course) then you should be fine! Have fun - I am up in Canada so it is way too far away for me and I cannot afford to fly :encouragement:

I was planning to get there around 6:30 AM and after reading this, maybe even earlier now that I know people will be there. It's definitely about the camaraderie! I'm not a "stalker" or -- contrary to what my friends think -- crazed Stephen King fanatic, I just love the man! His characters and worlds have given my life so much pleasure. I just want to meet him! To the campers -- go for it, absolutely, if you look forward to the camaraderie and delightful absurdity. p.s. There are a bunch of cafes, restaurants and such that stay open late in the area, and also a public restroom in Union Square park nearby (not sure when that closes or the condition, but I've used it during the day without fear).

BUT SK FANS, I KNOW YOU FEEL MY PAIN: Last week, I learned I have an important work thing happening on 11/11 (noooooo!!!!) and I will have to ask for a personal day when I really should be helping out in the office. Do I confess up that "I just NEED to see Stephen King!!!!!!!!!" Ha. I'm going to just go for it and say I need a personal day for something time sensitive. What would you do, "constant readers?"

Ha ha thanks GNTLGNT, I needed that laugh. Happy to report I got the day off! So now the question is….what time to show up for The Line. Does anyone have any tips regarding the NYC experience? Is 4 AM reasonable? Or do I need to drag myself there by 3 AM or earlier to ensure my prized wristband? To re-quote the start of this thread, what are people planning to do for the NY appearance on 11/11?

This is my first time going for a signing so I'm not sure what to expect. I will def be there before 3AM though....maybe I will push it to midnight at the latest.

Would be nice if there is a group there at that point.....I'd rather not be the only person sitting in the middle of the night outside B&N in NYC : )

I teach in Queens and plan on going straight to Union Square after work. I will probably grab some drinks, get a bite to eat, and get on line before midnight. I was reading posts in other forums where people have gone to his Union Square signings in the past and that there have been people waiting on line well before midnight. See ya all there. I will prob get on line around 11 or midnight myself. I figure this is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I blew it years ago when I went to a short story reading (not by King, but he wrote the intro) of America's Best Short Stories, and King sat in my row (1st row!) two seats away to my right, with nobody sitting in between us. I was too shy to even say hello! Arrrghhhh!

Wow! Thanks for all these replies! I'm getting there way early simply because I don't know what to expect tonight. I imagine I'll be in Union Square somewhere between 7:30 to 8 p.m. with my little folding chair and sleeping bag. Hell, maybe I'll buy a book before I get on line to wait.

It's not that I want to be first on line. I've said it many times, I'm not a die-hard Stephen King fan. I have no bookshelf devoted to him. I have read far more Michael Crichton books than SK's, but please don't read anything into that. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm going precisely because I'm not the type of fan who would bother a celebrity who's eating dinner. There's something unseemly about waiting outside of a celebrity's hotel room, waiting to ambush him/her with an autograph request.

1. SK's putting himself out there for this.
2. I live 55 minutes away in NJ.
3. Sleeping on a sidewalk that has been peed and puked on has its advantages in that I'll be getting a break from my 3-year-old son and might actually get a restful night of sleep.
4. Stephen King, despite what Harold Bloom thinks, will go down in history along with Lovecraft, Wells, Shelley. People will talk about SK's works long after he throws the sink through the window and runs off into the wilderness like the Chief from Cuckoo's Nest. Being a budding author, knowing how hard it is to scratch out a living being a novelist, it's only natural to look up to King for all he's accomplished, and know that while the odds are indeed long, success is possible, but not guaranteed.

Do I want to sleep on a NYC sidewalk? Of course not! But I also don't want to risk getting there at 5 or 6 a.m. and see that the line stretches through the Lincoln Tunnel. Carpe Diem, people.

I'll be wearing a gray Krampus hoodie (I'm pretty sure I'll be the only one), so feel free to say hello!

I will be sitting with my mom on line. I hope I can find parking within a couple of blocks. I will be wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs hoodie (I brought a comfy change of clothes, lol). Not sure what time I will get on line, but it will def be midnight the latest. Maybe I'll hang in the bookstore to kill time. I am not excited about sleeping on the sidewalk on my day off either, but this is a bucketlist goal of mine......does anyone know if King is speaking? Or is this simply a signing? Im not a crazed fan either, but his writing has given me many hours of joy and solitude. Hope this book is good! I wonder how many people will be there. I called Barnes and Noble and they said that they have had over 500 calls regarding the event. Anyone bringing cards? lol. We'll have to make friends with line neighbors to "watch spots" so we can venture off to pee and grab coffees. Happy line sitting!

This is a signing only--he will not be speaking or reading.

Does anyone think you can get a picture with him after he signs your book? Or will it be signature only then move on?
