This is an inguinal hernia? My 1 year old son had to have bilateral herniorraphies. It was horrifying because he was 1! He came out of the anesthesia so messed up, screeching. They told us to take him home and keep him quiet and don't let him climb anything. I'm looking at this screaming, distraught child thinking, "I ruined him!" By the end of the day, he was running around the house like nothing happened! It took his dad and I everything in us to keep him from climbing.

You should do very well. Just don't climb anything.
The doc never said which/what kind it was, just 'You have a hernia. You have to see the specialist.' I did ask how long I might be way-laid and he said just a few days but I would have to do 'light duty' at work for 4-6 weeks, which since I can't prove it's work related, means that I can't get paid for 'light duty'. Luckily I have 4 weeks of paid sick leave accumulated. Plus a week of vacation time. This will give me plenty of time to get thru the two stacks of books in my 'To-Be-Read' pile!!!

Good luck - this seems to be an uncomplicated procedure for most - but being older (well older than 25 I'm guessing! :) - probably the worst part will be the anesthetic - you will feel woozy for a while. I hope it does not hurt too much

So, I just found out yesterday that I have a hernia! Been having some pain issues down in my lower groin area (where my kidney stone was) for awhile and it was getting worse the last couple of weeks, so I made myself go to the doctor and get it checked out. After the intial exam I now have to go to a 'specialist' (I hate doing this!) and then be operated on. Anyone have any words of wisdom or advice on what to ask the 'specialist' when I go see him? Good news is that this is the same specialist that did the hernia operation on the docter that I saw, so he must be good. I hoped I would be able to make it thru my life without being cut open but I guess this is not going to be the case. I'm not happy! I NEED CHOCOLATE!!!!
Ask the surgeon to explain what and where the hernia is (a hernia is an opening in a muscle wall. Yours is in a very typical location. The male inguinal muscle wall is compromised from birth due to the fact that the testicles must drop from the abdomen into the scrotal sac through openings in the bilateral inguinal muscles. Then the openings heal. But the muscles are subject to reopening). Ask him what activities you can and cannot do and how long you cannot do them. Ask about other recovery issues: how much pain to expect, what treatments will be reguired, if there will be medications to take postop. Ask about insurance.

These surgeries are exceptionally common. Everything should go very well. Just follow postop orders to make sure healing can take place as quickly and efficiently as possible.

And don't climb.

Watch out for Angina Pectoris - she is the meanest nurse on the ward!

(((NN))) Be brave. We are thinking of you. Concussion IS nasty. The after effects should slowly pass away but it usually takes a little time and it goes up and down. Days that are good, almost normal, followed by worse days when you don't think anything is getting better. Just take it as easy as you can and let the healing process take its course. As George Harrison says "All things must pass"
(((KRF))) Isch! An operation is never funny but it is a relatively minor one. It should go well, i think. And ,as someone said, ask questions about what you can and can not do before and afterwards. Thoughts sent towards you.

You are a Caregiver!

You are a very loving, warm and passionate person. You really care about the people in your life, and you will go to great lengths to help them in times of need.
Although helping others is very appreciated, it does come with a personal price. You often put the needs of others before your own, and give up on your personal ambitions in order to be there for others. You should try to take some time off from your busy day and have some me-time, you truly deserve it!
