The Ruins had pace all right. My problem with it was another. I never really connected to the characters so when bad things start to happen i never really cared enough to make it really scary. But it was an easily read book.
I never connected with the characters either. The premise was good, the writingwas good, but overall it was somewhat too long for the set-up.

The woods are lovely dark and deep
Finders Keepers, finally. Which reminded me that Puppy Maggie ate the last 40 pages of Mr. Mercedes, so I never did finish it. :confusion:
YOU MISSED THE LAST FORTY PAGES?!?!?! Bet you could find a copy in the library and maybe spend a few minutes there to finish the book. The characters really shine in those last pages.

What is it with puppies and books? Visiting my sister in FL, left my paperback book on THE BED; when I came back the book had been demolished by her puppy! I had borrowed it from the library too!!! Lucky for me the librarian just laughed when I offered to pay for it!

skimom2 & do1you9love? I finished The Ruins last night. My first reaction was to throw the book away, somewhere so I couldn't see it. My second reaction was Noooooooooooo! This can't be happening!
I thought it kept up the pace alright, up to the end, one or two things I saw coming but that's ok; this has been one of the most intense horror novels I have read. It reminded me of Blood Meridian. Of course this one doesn't have Cormack McCarthy's amazing prose; Blood Meridian was unforgettable not only for the achingly horrific acts of cruelty but also for the incredible writing and I know this isn't a horror novel per se but I saw it as such.
One thing bothered me
how come so many people died on that hill but the Mayans couldn't find a way to warn them? I get it they didn't speak a common language but some signs are universal.
Overall I'm glad I read it and I recommend it but I don't think I'll ever read it again. This one gave me some incredibly vivid nightmares.

Started a book called Christian beginnings. About the history of christianity in the years from Jesus to Niceae 325 when it was officially declared what was the correct christianity (so to speak anyway). Goes through the Gospels, Paul and churchfathers like Barnabas, Ignatius, Clement, Diognetus, Justin, Ireneaus, Origen and Tertullian to name a few important ones before Nicaea. And then the main players there like Athanasius, Eusebius amd Arius and, of course, Constantine. It is an interesting story of a time when chhristianity had not yet decided where to go. When they actually debated what was right and wrong. Oh, they used strong words to be sure but it was words, not swords, they used. Later, sadly, many of the views that did not make it at Nicaea were persecuted as heresy.

Have you read Scott Smith's other novel, A Simple Plan? Really excellent. I liked The Ruins too, but A Simple Plan is better, IMO. It was made into a really great movie as well.

My mom convinced me to read it quite a few years ago (I think she's read it several times). There's a lot going on in that book, so much to absorb.
