Mispronunciation, especially from people who get paid to speak well. Like newscasters.
I think the one that bugs me the most is nuke-yoo-lar for nuclear. Followed closely by esk-yoo-later for escalator.
And when people say "all the sudden" instead of "all of a sudden." That one gets me too.

A myriad of . . .

The dictionary tells me that it is perfectly acceptable usage, but it just jangles against my ear when I know that "myriad" is a perfectly good adjective all by itself.

Whenever I see some hack describe "a myriad of" something, I picture some elementary-school kid who has been assigned a 500-word essay and is counting the words as he goes.

When salespeople ask your name shortly after you walk into the store. Like they'll plaster on their fake smile, introduce themselves, then ask your name. I just want to shop. If I need help I'll ask, but hitting me with instant questions guarantees I will not buy anything there nor ever set foot in that store again.

How about 'supposably' instead of 'supposedly?' Aghhhhh!

My pet peeve for the day is schizophrenia. That is what doctors diagnose you with if they THINK that something is wrong with you but don't know what. It is a blanket term for a wide range of things.

The USA stands as number one marketing more and more realistic hand weapons as toys that are all 'made in China'. Two countries still doing this in the 21st century and still advertising with pride. Sickening!

My husband and I own (and are trained to use) guns. BUT neither of our children has ever had so much as a toy water pistol (not even our 12 yr old who likes dressing as a police officer on a regular basis). Guns are not toys and should not be marketed as such. I'm not saying that kids who play with toy guns are any more likely to commit crimes than kids who don't, I just think there are so many other games children can play without pretending to be violent toward one another.

I am going to follow on from the posts about diagnoses and say my pet peeve is the diagnosis of stress for everything in the medical profession.

Stress is a serious issue and can have terrible effects. However, whenever I go to the Doctors for anything, as I did today, they ask what I do for a living. I have work in a high pressure environment (well, when I am not on here), and that is fine. As soon as I say, they kind of fold their arms in a 'what did you expect' kind of way.

I then have to say that I am not stressed, I have no other symptoms and then push for further investigation. I think it just means that people dont recognise or believe real stress if anything and everything is blamed on stress.
