My son is now in the U.S. Coast Guard. Very proud of him.

The recruiter told us after the ceremony this morning that when he first met Marcus several months ago Marcus was with a large group of kids. Marc is the only one who has followed through. He graduates from high school this May and he doesn't feel ready for college. He wants to get out of Idaho and see some of the world and earn his own keep. It's a four enlistment and he likes the idea of being out on his own sooner rather than later. He doesn't want to still be living with us in three years. As I said we're proud of him and the Coast Guard is a good branch. I spent fourteen years in the Army Reserve/National Guard and Regular Army (1986-2000) and I concluded ,while I was still in, that I should have gone Coast Guard or Air Force. Marc is a good kid. Correction he's a young man now. Yep. Very proud.

Well it's official. Our son Marcus was sworn into the U.S. Coast Guard this morning. He ships out for recruit training at the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey on the 29th of August. His mother and I are very proud of him. This is something that he wanted and he's done it on his own without having to be poked and prodded by us.
Congratulation! It will be a big change in scenery for your son- Cape May is a quaint town on the tip of NJ. I used to work just a few miles north . Must success to your son.

Oh wait a second! If you are from Idaho, then perhaps I should have said "You must be right proud of him?" (I dunno - I'm a Canuck so not sure how you Americans speak!)

...this is awesome!...as a Dad of an Army vet, I know the pride you feel....thank the newest "Coastie" for his service and may Poseidon be kind to him....

A couple Navy vets that work at my department refer to the Coast Guard as the "Shallow Water Navy" however they are quick to add that the Coast Guard has the admiration of many in the Deep Water Navy.
