Heheheheh, I just reached the part where it says Lawson is
I would never have imagined it was Lawson, though.
Larry's name. It totally surprised me as I had never thought about what his real name could be.

Do they "sound black" when they sing?
Hahaha, SK would be strung from the media's rafters if he wrote that line today!
I understand it more as a cultural thing - a fine distinction but a real one.Yeah.
I can get the "sound as black" thing.

When I taught elementary music, the hardest thing to do with the black, and especially the Hispanic, kids was to get them singing in a head voice rather than a chest voice. The music they hear at home encourages the latter; it produces both a lower-pitched voice and different sonorities. Which for lack of another term "sounds black."
Tejano...I am not real familiar with what it IS and what it ISN'T, but in general, lots of accordion!Definitely. Just like other "positive stereotypes" I can think of, that of seeing Japanese people as very smart, English people as respectful of punctuality or Italian people as wonderful cooks. When these are true, it is not because of genes, but because of culture, as you said.
I would like to know what music Hispanic people listen to where you live, since most of us are Hispanic here and we all listen to different music, I cannot think which one would make people use a chest voice. A lot of guys here want to go for higher pitches.

The main times I hear it is as a police officer, when I have to give loud music warnings to kid's birthday parties. The thing here is, invite the whole family, get a bounce house for the kids, a lot of booze for the parents, and have the party on the lawn with lots of meat cooked on the grill. When the beer has mostly disappeared, the live band comes on and plays Tejano music, loudly and badly.
I wish I spoke the language; I'd probably be able to get a plate out of it - always smells awesome!
