Hahaha, SK would be strung from the media's rafters if he wrote that line today!

Yeah.

And although I know racism is just as racist (as in "stereotypical") when used for positive traits, I can get the "sound as black" thing.

In my mind, some black singers have so great voices with an awesome range, all of us other colors have no hope to achieve.

Yeah.

I understand it more as a cultural thing - a fine distinction but a real one.

When I taught elementary music, the hardest thing to do with the black, and especially the Hispanic, kids was to get them singing in a head voice rather than a chest voice. The music they hear at home encourages the latter; it produces both a lower-pitched voice and different sonorities. Which for lack of another term "sounds black."

Definitely. Just like other "positive stereotypes" I can think of, that of seeing Japanese people as very smart, English people as respectful of punctuality or Italian people as wonderful cooks. When these are true, it is not because of genes, but because of culture, as you said.

I would like to know what music Hispanic people listen to where you live, since most of us are Hispanic here and we all listen to different music, I cannot think which one would make people use a chest voice. A lot of guys here want to go for higher pitches.

Tejano...I am not real familiar with what it IS and what it ISN'T, but in general, lots of accordion!
The main times I hear it is as a police officer, when I have to give loud music warnings to kid's birthday parties. The thing here is, invite the whole family, get a bounce house for the kids, a lot of booze for the parents, and have the party on the lawn with lots of meat cooked on the grill. When the beer has mostly disappeared, the live band comes on and plays Tejano music, loudly and badly.

I wish I spoke the language; I'd probably be able to get a plate out of it - always smells awesome!

I don't like beer, but I also would like the grill party thing. :chew:

I don't like causing others discomfort just because I want to have fun, so I would not like the loud music.

If you want to get a plate, try:

Huele muy bien. ¿Puedo probar un poco?

WEHleh MOOey beeEHn.
