Kirk was an initial prototype for the final result...Picard!
Didn't start airing over here until September 1990 (but that sort of delay was common in those days; it's why the whole 'What the UK does now is what America was doing 5 years ago' thing came about). And yep, the biggest part of S1 was a dud, as was a fair chunk of S2. As no bounce no play said, the earlier eps were pretty much retreads of TOS plots, slightly dressed up - I'll disagree about Yar, though. I kind of liked her. Can't think why... (Actually, that's a lie: there was one scene in 'The Naked Now' where my jaw just dropped open. Gimme a break, though, I was only 17. )
'Encounter at Farpoint' was probably the worst opening double-ep in the franchise's history, though. None of them have been particularly great, admittedly, but EaF? *shudder* I actually hated Troi as a character back then. Fortunately she, and the series as a whole, got a lot better, and the only character I was happy to see the back of was Wesley (though I have nothing against Wil Wheaton).
Was The Naked Now the episode where Yar and Data got friendly? I didn't like Troi either - I liked her better when her mom started appearing in the series
Our BBCAmerica tv channel airs a lot of Star Trek reruns. Are a lot of y'all fans?
