I looked and the wife stores baking trays down there. I always thought it was for catching crumbs and such, like a toaster. I am an ignorant fool sometimes. I use the word 'sometimes' quite loosely.

I was once told it was meant to broil food. I try it and well either me or the oven got it wrong since it came out bad. :-(. Now I leave it empty.

Mine has some broiling pans and also a metal colander - I just had to go look - there are also some sieves in there, a fold-up steamer, a teflon pan (small one for 1 - 2 eggs) and an aluminum pie plate.

We found a dead mouse under that drawer once when we pulled it out to clean - he was a crispy critter (that would explain why the cats used to crouch there and stare at that drawer for some time).
Those cats were like the lady in the commercial outside the store saying 'Open! Open! Open!'
We have a Jenn-Air so our drawer isn't a drawer. It houses the grease trap and the exhaust assembly. There is a hole in the back where the exhaust hose goes, which is much the same as a dryer hose (only greasy). We do store broiler pans and baking sheets on the right side.
But, once, it held something more... One late fall day a few years ago, a young possum figured out how to crawl up inside. It managed to disconnect the hose and there it was in the compartment. I heard it making noise, knocking around the pans down there so I opened it -- it opens with a hinged bottom -- and there he is, hissing at me. I called the hubby and we spent 20 minutes getting it into a pet carrier. He took it out to the river and let it go. The hose was reattached more firmly.
But, once, it held something more... One late fall day a few years ago, a young possum figured out how to crawl up inside. It managed to disconnect the hose and there it was in the compartment. What the heck? Hasn't anyone used their broiler function on their stove?Cooks the food,usually steaks,chops,burgers,etc,quicker..at least that is what my stove does,look at the main control on your oven,does it have a broil feature?If so,turn it on,wait a minute,then look and see if that drawer is heating up..maybe some ovens have the broiler at the top of the oven,but doubt it,just try to broil a steak it is good!
