I'm having computer issues too-lappie comes on (I can hear it running), but nothing on the screen. Sadly, I'm a complete technodork, and I'm stiss hearing Charlie Brown teacher voice here. Simple question: has anyone ever had a lappie fixed, and is it worth the cost? I've been in mourning, as I have most of a manuscript sitting in a folder on the desktop. I do back up, but just that day had moved it from my flash to the desktop to reformat :(. Struggling on with the ancient desktop, but it's sorely out of date. I HAVE A SAD.
As the laptop starts up, punch F8 repeatedly and see if the boot menu comes up. On some computers, it's F10. If you can get the boot menu to pop up, you can start the computer in safe mode and try a system restore.

If the drive is still working, you can remove the drive, use a sata to usb connection cable and hook up your drive to another computer. The computer should read the additional drive just like it would if you plugged in a flash drive. You can then sort thru your files, and copy anything you need to another flash drive or some other storage media. Also on your laptop, if you shine a flashlight onto the screen, can you see anything booting up? If you can, most likely means the backlight is out on your screen. Computer is still in good condition. Round trip on getting the backlight fixed I would guess would be around $100-$150 depending on model, labor time, etc.

Today I was cruising through the thread Kittens and when I got to page 3 I was blocked by Google chrome due to malware. Has this happened to anyone else? I just closed out everything with no problems.
This has happened to me a few times during moderating and unfortunately I can't usually remove the image because my firewalls won't let me onto the page.
Sometimes if I catch it within the 10 min (editing) time frame, I can ask the member that posted it to remove the image.
I could probably get rid of them myself if I turned off my virus protection, but I don't like to do that.

No don't turn off your firewall. No problems here.

Yeah Jordan's advice is best.

Here is link to thing I have and have used several times when the controller circuitry on an external drive took a crap:

Amazon.com: SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable for 2.5 / 3.5 Inch Hard Drive / 5 inch Optical Drive with External AC Power Adapter: Computers & Accessories
I love it, thank you.
I'm just afraid that even with an alternative reader, the drive still won't spin. If that happens, I'm skrood. I might have to save up and send it off to a service to get my files retrieved.
I'll be sure and try it on a tower computer, not just my laptop. That's something I wouldn't have thought of if not for the advice here.
Heck, I wouldn't have thought of any of it.
Thanks, you guys.

As long as you have an available SATA cable (and a plug from the power supply [black]), you should be able to hook the drive to a relatively modern computer (< 5-7 years old). Just be sure to shut down the computer, unplug the power, and press the power button once before opening it up.

When you power up(boot up) press f12 or f8 for Bios settings. I don't know enough of the problem, but if the computer is running without the monitor, it could be the monitor. the screen resolution may be too high.
