I tried searching for the answer to this topic on the forum, because someone must have already asked this, but I couldn't find the proper keywords to bring it up. I therefore will simply ask the question.

Does anyone know the exact meaning of the dates at the end of King's books? Obviously they represent when the writing started and ended, but what does the end date really mean? Does that signify the end of the first draft, or the final draft? And if it is the final draft, is it the final final draft, as in the draft that will head to the printer, the one after all the editing/proofreading/etc.?

Was thinking about this after noticing the dates at the end of Revival. That one seemed pretty quickly written.

The dates refer to the time in which he wrote the first draft of the book.

Prufrock, that was a great existential answer. Almost an idea for a story (imagine a writer finding a weird time pocket that grants her access to future books she has yet to write).

Thanks for the answer, Ms. Mod. It's actually a very interesting fact. I would have guessed the end date was the absolute final draft, but this puts things into a lot of perspective.

Just noticed that the date at the end of End of Watch is for the Second Draft, not the first, but it's still in the editing phase. Will try to remember to check if the date changes once final edits are made.
