...I'm not going to turn this into another gun debate, I'm simply going to grieve for colleagues in my other line of work that died in the most senseless way possible...working in a prison has made me much more situationally aware, but as a radio veteran of many live broadcasts and interviews-I can attest to the fact that it is nigh on impossible to have your eyes everywhere when conducting a face to face piece, without appearing rude and unprofessional to the interviewee....may all of those affected find peace, and for the lost I will dim the "On The Air" light my next trip to the studio....

For every whacked-out nut job who gets himself on the news for mishandling guns, there's hundreds, if not thousands of quietly responsible gun owners.

Guns were created as a defense mechanism, during a time when men and women were capable of responsibility and held themselves accountable. It's unfortunate that bad people have since turned an inanimate object into such a pariah.

Don't blame the inanimate object for the evils of men. Blame the man, and punish the evil accordingly.
I agree with this.
It's very sobering. Every morning when you pick what clothes to wear and lace up your shoes, it literally could be the last. Going to the store, walking outside to water my plants, each person going to work, every single one of us could be met with a sudden end, either natural or as the result of foul play.
It's a humbling reminder to make every minute count.

I was reading something recently by John Straley -- whose stories take place mostly in Alaska -- where the hero (a white man) makes a reference about "anvils falling out of the sky" to a native woman. It's a uniquely American reference to a cartoon phenomenon that is actually a very good metaphor. The native woman without the frame of reference says, matter-of-factly: "Anvils do not fall from the sky."

But they do, don't they?

I'm so tired of crazy people getting their hands on guns. Honestly, I really think the only way to stop these copy cat murderers is not to give them air time in the press. I know this is against freedom of the press but if we don't give them air time on TV, I truly believe these crimes would go down. The crazy folks with guns would have less incentive to go down "in a blazing glory" and then end their own life. And, if they do survive like the wacko movie theatre killer from CO who got sentenced today, make his life miserable in prison as an example for others. Something has to change!

Even if the media was somehow forbidden from showing this stuff, people would just turn to the web and find another country's news to watch. But I do agree that a huge part of the reason these guys do this stuff is for the notoriety.

A huge portion of the population will be mentally ill at some point in their lives, and a huge portion of the population has easy access to weapons. It's a recipe for disaster.

We require all drivers to take tests and a gradual phased in period of time before they are fully licensed, and no one has a problem with that. We apparently can't do this with weapons because some tobacco farmers over 200 years ago thought we should have a well-regulated militia.

Mentally ill..not so sure,I think a lot of these idiots are just maladjusted clowns that are looking for attention and use a gun to get it.A lot. or most of them/ know exactly what they are doing, and why,and just don't give a damn, they go ahead and take the lives of their victims and ruin countless other people's,because they are angry and messed up..they know the difference between right and wrong, but are so damn selfish they just don't care.Sad situation, those poor ladies and that cameraman, just awful for them to be taken like that..

The question is how will Obama's enemies find a way to blame him for this? He has already been blamed for the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Detractors say he staged the whole thing to pass stricter gun laws. Is there a "Blame Canada"-type song about Obama?

Any sane person realizes that Obama is trying to fix this problem. Sure, you'll have the NRA crowd who feel these crimes will prevent them from getting automatic rifles but they are a small minority. I truly hope the majority of Americans stand behind the potus and congress for some serious change. I won't hold my breath though.....

Depends on how many Americans keep ignoring the problem and for how long. Or is that a point of view that's too negative (me being from a different continent and having never visited the USA)?

That's a tough question. From the start of US history, our country's independence and firearms are intertwined to prevent other nations from trying to overthrow our young country. But, with the advancement of firearms, we need to find a balance between personal rights and society's safety. Every country has their problems but we have a glaring issue that we need and will address.
Don't feel bad for us (but prayers and thoughts for these victims). I live in a pretty awesome country. I might say "greatest country" but that's a different thread on this board......
