Does anyone have any idea as to what the death flies are, how Dan can only see them on occasion (for example, he sees them on himself and his mother at one point but not on the hospice patients), and if anyone with a strong enough shine, like Abra can see them?

Welcome to the message board. I know that the flies that Dan sees symbolises impending death in a person, (the more flies the more likely it is that there is no hope for that person) but it's been too long since I last read it for me to remember if others also saw the flies.

...welcome!....I would say they’re a manifestation of the “shine”....an occasional harbinger of death....

Hi, thanks for the welcome! I only recently got into Stephen King's novel and this was my second book. That's probably the right answer but I kind of expected more meaning to them, I guess. Even Dan wondered why he could only occasionally see them, and I thought they would play a more significant role, but I guess not. Thanks so much again for taking the time to reply!

I have the e-book so it's easier for me to look things up. Afaik, only Dan was able to see them, thought he did wonder if the cat could, or how the cat knew someone was dying. I just wish that they had been explained more or expanded upon, rather than being a minor but interesting detail about Dan. And thanks for the welcome! I'm on my third Stephen King novel, and I love that this is a pretty active place to talk about his works!

....you will find that King leaves much to our imaginative interpretations.....the basic meat is there, it's up to us to slap it on the skeleton.....
