Somewhere over the rainbow
Can I just object to this "haters" label? I don't hate the Patriots, nor do I root for them. I would've like to've seen Brady punished, yes, for his disregard of the rules, but he didn't so I shrug and move on. He's got a lot of talent.

The Patriots are a great team. What befuddles me is they don't have to cheat like they do, and when they do, it . I guess it's their competitive nature. And then as opposed to "haters," the unconditional "lovers" of the team cry foul, or justify it, whenever, yeah, cheating is found.

Broncos are my team. If they cheat, they shouldn't get away with it. In fact, they had two members of their team suspended for one and four (I think) games. They didn't file a Federal action. They took it. In fact, one of the guys said, "It's my fault, and I'll serve it out." Kinda refreshing, actually.

Grandpa, I apologize... I fear I'm overwrought.
Didn't mean that you're a "hater"... Really. I did not.
I'm a little sensitive about my football team.
The misinformation on them makes me wanna scream.

Suddenly the country has decided that we cheat
Due to rumors from 2 coaches whom New England beat.
We're accused of planting bugs (though none were ever found),
Placing guys on mountaintops to spy from higher ground,

Serving teams warm Gatorade or stealing peoples trash,
Only winning games with balls from Brady's private stash,
Claims the only Super Bowls we won were those we stole...
That it was Bill Belichick behind the grassy knoll.

Thus, New England tells itself that "haters gonna hate,"
That the country's piling on our team because they're great,
That we are the New York Yankees of the NFL...
But, if I've offended you, I'm sorrier than hell.

Great job, Ms. S. No need for apologies, particularly if someone like me gets in a snit, but graciously accepted. We're friends here on this lovely forum. Friends can disagree.

My objection really was more global than specific, which is why I didn't quote you in that post. We hear a lot of any disagreement, no matter whether civil or not, being called "hating," and I just object to that in general.

I look at it that those who love the Patriots are going to rally to defend them, and every accusation, substantiated or not, is conspiratorial or ill-minded, trying to undermine their team. Those who hate the Patriots are going to see every accusation, substantiated or not, as confirmation that the Patriots are less than worthy of their success.

Then you have some (perhaps not many) like me who take every accusation for what it is, an accusation, and look to see whether it's substantiated. And maybe not look too hard, because in the big scheme, it's an academic exercise. My life is neither enriched nor embittered by what happens to the Patriots. If you got right down to it, I shake my head in not-proud wonder at the level of human resources, material and emotional, that goes into sports. We are a weird species.

The Patriots as the football Yankees. It's a really good comparison. But then again, I enjoyed David Halberstam's October 1964. The Patriots, or any football team, would probably prefer to be the Pittsburgh Steelers (six championships), especially of the '70s (four in that decade alone).

Gosh, I love Football season....and a good poem!!:applause:

I agree with your observations about the perception from both sides. I think we can expect for a long time that any complaint no matter how trivial by an opposing team is going to be blown out of proportion--whether by the team complaining or the media--if it's about the Patriots.

When Steve and I were talking about the Patriots on Wednesday, he relayed a quote he'd heard (although in the context of baseball) but he couldn't remember who it should be attributed to that went along the lines of "If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough." :smile2:

I've always said they all cheat.....this time, it was the Patriots turn to get caught. Soon, it will be someone else's turn.

I've never liked them, though......just like some folks have never liked the Cowboys ;;D

Unfortunately for the Patriots, everyone seems to forget about the other teams who cheat. The Cowboys are one of those ambivalent teams for me but my partner detests them. :smile2: The Giants and Ravens are the ones on my "anyone but" list.

I know what you mean. Remember back in the day when the Raiders were the dirtiest, worst for cheating team?

For me, it's a Southern thing not to like the Patriots ;;D :D

Thank you. I'm not very hopeful of Big Blue's chances this year, unfortunately, but my devotion shall not waver..........

I'm with you on that, even though their schedule seems to favor them this year. I'll have to wear a brown paper bag over my head if they somehow manage to lose to the Jets.

Sorry I'm late checking in.......I was having trouble with my headset......:applause:

Bigger problems in that game than the headsets not working (for either team BTW). There is no way on God's green earth you are going to win a game if you leave Gronk open. That's just bad defense. That guy is on a whole other level than everyone else when he's healthy.
