Asked one of my customers who is Chinese if the number 13 has any bad luck connotations in China. No. But the numbers 4 and 7 are no good...something to do with words like them, the pronunciation, if I understood correctly. :) And the number 9 has to do with royalty. Wonder if "dressed to the nines" had any Chinese influence? There is a palace in Beijing with 999 rooms...something to do with steps, too...nine steps, royalty. Imagine some poor carpenter in China...logically, the layout calls for nine steps...but that's a no-no...unless you're royalty. Or it was at one time. Customer comes back from wherever, working the fields maybe...what! Nine steps! Carpenter is smiling, nodding...thinking, oh crap, I forgot! Pairs, too...critical for place settings, sounds like...always an even number. Three, no no...four, okay, six eight ten twelve all okay.

I must note that if we operated in base 4 numbering, then the unlucky 13 is the same as lucky 7 in base 8 and higher.

I mean, I hate to state the obvious, but there you have it.

That explains everything. Thank you! Needed something to take my mind off our little excursion today...stop at the doctor's on the way...this lump thing. Oh joy. Between what my Chinese customer said..."4-0-7 means your wife is going to die" and this here, something to ponder as we head south. Maybe Carrot Top will have the answer? No idea, me. Could stop and ask Xinli to clarify things. Gut feeling he'd say something to put me over the lump....errrrrr! hump! Have a great weekend! :) Adios!

Good article! If you know me, you know it's my favorite day. Now if it would just come a fantastic thunderstorm, I'd be so content.
I've heard the superstition started because Pope Somebody had the Knights Templar tracked down and massacred on Friday, Oct 13th some centuries ago.
It's a good number - it's my birthday (In August, at 3:13 PM), my niece had a nasty tumor removed and began her cancer free journey on Friday, May 13th five years ago.
I'm feeling strong today, in spite of some no so pleasant happenings at Chez Holly. No one's stealing my joy! Especially not today.
Party on.
