Atwood also spoke about this app, I think it was called Clean Reader, where books are taken and the language and objectionable scenes are cleaned up. Apparently there are choices for clean, extra clean and squeaky clean? Or maybe she was kidding. But a number of authors have requested that their books not be allowed access for this.

What are your thoughts on cleaning up the offensive things from classic books and books from the authors you love?

I don't like the idea. Shouldn't we be able to read a story as it was written/intended? If we decide during reading that it is distasteful, we can stop. (It does kinda sound like a joke app, doesn't it?)

Oh, it's a real thing. Bet you can't imagine who dreamed up THAT travesty? Swear to God, this state hosts the greatest number of Nosy Nannys I've ever seen. If you don't want to read it as it was written, DON'T READ IT. From experience, every word in a book (at least one done properly, with real editing) is there with intent--the author meant for it to be there, to accomplish something in a story. I despise these arbiters of what is 'right'.

The CR people are hoping that their app will pass as legal because THEY aren't making any changes to the original file (they learned from Clean Films), the reader is doing it like they were taking a magic marker and blacking out any words they find objectionable. I don't know if an author can opt out, either, unless they don't allow their e-book to be hosted (you do know that you don't OWN e-books, right? You get a download of a master file that belongs to Amazon, B&N, whoever, and they can pull them anytime. You lease e-books, in essence.) by Amazon, B&N, etc. It is the app that makes the changes.

She said that many authors were requesting their work be pulled from CR. Not sure if they do it, but many authors don't want their work cleaned up. And I agree. It's their work, I don't have to read it .

I don't guess the Nancy Drew mysteries are considered classics lol but I thought it was really silly when they were "cleaned up". I guess they could have been considered insensitive but cheese louise, all bad guys were dark back when the stories were written - it had nothing to do with anyone's race.

Oh man, Nancy Drew's were cleaned up? I loved those as a kid and I very recently went back and read one. Dumbest crap ever. And already squeaky clean.!

Interesting how the thread somewhat morphed into, "Is Stephen King an author for the ages?" which is a pretty good topic if unresolvable.

I don't know if Mark Twain considered himself an author for the ages, but he brought a revolutionary American outlook to literature, and he survives quite well still.

Horatio Alger sold a gazillion books in his time, and he may (or may not) have considered that number to enshrine himself as an author for the ages, but has anyone here actually read one of his works?

Time will tell who survives and who thrives. Humans are notoriously poor prognosticators of where they end up going.

She also talked about Mein Kampf, the book written by Adolph Hitler (and in my TBR pile). This book was published in 1925. If anyone bothered to read it, he told exactly what he was going to do, and then he did it. I find this interesting. This goes right to my point I've always made about these idiots speaking at The United Nations and no one staying around to listen. We have to listen to what scary leaders are saying. And I've quoted this so many times in regards to people in power, I probably say it in my sleep, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." Michael Corleone.

People say ignore them. Nope. We have to pay attention and listen and maybe we can head some things off. Change the conversation. I'd rather try then regret not trying.

This is really sickening and completely scary... I did not know this, Deej.
I agree with you... we need to know, turning away is dangerous.

Yes, I didn't know this either. She talked about this though , that if anyone had bothered to read his book, they would have known exactly what he was going to do!

I took a Holocaust class my senior year of college and learned about this for the first time - I need to read the book also. Hard to believe the information was out there and people remained incredulous about what was happening - so very heartbreaking. If only Hitler could've made money as an artist...

The only Atwood read was a short stories in my lit book called Rape Fantasies--which I thought was brilliant! I tried to read Cat's Eye and I was editing it in my head. Then last fall I tried to give Handmaids Tale a try and it just bored me to tears. Stephen King take me away!

Ick, this post needs re-written. No wonder I got fired LOL.

Hitlers book is still banned in Germany but historian work for a couple of years on a commented version.
I don't know if it is an urban myth but it's known as one of the most sold book which no one has read. I think newly weds got it for free as a present back then.

I once read a part of a speech by Hitler in school and it was only one term which made his mind-set clear. Nihilism I think i will never forget the meaning of this term.
