Hi! My name is Petra and I live on the Canadian prairie, which is famous for its tough winters. Out here, we pride ourselves on our ability to cope with the cold. I'm a 100% prairie gopher and I don't mind the cold any more because I grew up with it.

I've been a Stephen King fan ever since Carrie came out. I think I was just out of high school then. Stephen has been my favorite writer for many years. I recently finished reading Revival. I don't want to spoil things for people who haven't finished it yet, but I will say that the ending blew me away.

My favorite Stephen King novel is The Shining. My favorite short story from him is Word Processor of the Gods and my favorite of his novellas is Big Driver. My favorite Stephen King movie is The Green Mile.

I also love the novel It, and my favorite part of that book is this one little sub-plot that I call "The Tale of the Accidental Gay Bar". This "tale" occurs early in the book. For the uninitiated, it's about a bar called the Falcon, which is located next to Derry's bus depot. The owner/operator of the Falcon, Elmer Curtie, started the bar with the hope that it would attract a lot of business from bus riders on rest stops. It didn't work out. In fact, after a few years, Elmer was so deep in debt that he seriously considered closing the doors and getting on a bus to Florida.

Then business started to pick up, and "an amazing quiet sort of prosperity came over the bar." The customers were mostly young men, many with "outrageous" clothes. Soon the place became known as the local gay bar. But it took a couple of years for Elmer to figure that out. By then, the Falcon was doing so well, he didn't care. Business was good and it was the only bar in town that wasn't regularly smashed up by drunken brawlers.

I've always wondered whether that sub-plot was based on a real-life story because that would be cool.

P.S.: I'm also a big Joe Hill fan. If you love Stephen's books, you'll like Joe's latest novel, N0S4A2. (You do know that Joe is Stephen's son, right?) A few years ago, I saw Joe interviewed on a Canadian talk show and was impressed with his good attitude. He took a pen name when he was starting out because he wanted his books to succeed on their own merits. He didn't want to write mediocre or crappy books and have them get published just because he's Stephen King's son. Joe kept his identity secret for about ten years.

Best wishes to everyone out there for 2015.

Thanks for the welcome. I like your motto, "There'll be Chocolate, if God wills it." It reminds me of a tee-shirt I once got for my Mom: "If there's no chocolate in Heaven, then I don't want to go."

BTW, is there any way I can get a motto on my posts?
Thanks! & that's funny! :biggrin2:
