Ocean City PD Get A New Police Horse
By Leanne Murray - email
Frasier, a 4-year-old Percheron Thoroughbred Cross
OCEAN CITY, Md. - A local police department has four new hooves on their force. The Ocean City Police Department announced on Thursday that they added a new horse to their Mounted Unit, Frasier, a 4-year-old Percheron Thoroughbred Cross, from Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. Frasier was reportedly purchased using a donation from the late Virginia Murray.

Chief Ross Buzzuro said "Our Mounted Unit is a great asset to our department. Not only are they a great community relations tool but they can serve as an equivalent to five officers in many situations."

Officials say that Frasier is getting settled in his new home, and acclimated with his stall-mates, but once he is adjusted, he'll be out patrolling the streets and boardwalk. His first outing will in Ocean City will reportedly be on November 21 at Northside Park for the opening night of the 21st Annual Winterfest of Lights where citizens will have their chance to see Frasier for the first time.

The Chincoteague horses coming up on land after swimming from the island to the mainland for pony penning day. That's the day when the wild horses on the island are rounded up and some of them auctioned off so that the herd on the island is sustainable. I want to see this once before I croak.

There's a website somewhere that tracks the herd on the island, who's who, what babies are born and so forth. Even names the horses. I think I'll find it and keep a closer eye on this wonderful herd.

I'm just so glad that these animals are still allowed to live wild with the whole island to themselves. They need to be left alone.
