These old mining houses around here, EMARX, were built when wood and coal was cheap, every room had a stove, and they didn't have insulation so they melted the snow right off...hung up there on the overhang...so all/most of these homes have galvanized or aluminum flashing on the bottom two feet of roof rake. The idea that one can knock the ice loose from that easier...as it tends to bond to roofing material. So...we get ice dams on the eaves and the melt will find a way inside, eventually. Saw that contractor when I was up on the roof and I gave him what for. Have had the metal to do a repair for two years now. Heh! Plus, probably need to install metal on the front porch overhang...have a double roof, lots of insulation, ventilation, and I still have ice problems.
