I remember when one of my daughters was really worrying what would happen when her tortoise died. I told her we'd have a lovely funeral, bury it in a little grave with a beautiful cross on it. We'd have a big party with lots to drink, sweets and ice cream, and she could invite all her friends round. She said "Can we kill it now Dad?" :)

That sounds like when my father in law used to tell my now grown son that he could have all his train stuff when he died, my son used to say, when are you going to die grandad?
