My father took me to one of his campaign speeches in NH back when he was running for the 84 Presidential nomination. I was eight, yet I clearly remember him. My father walked up to him after the speech ended, made our introductions, and engaged Glenn in a five minute conversation. As we we bid him luck, he grasped my hand in both of his, holding it for a moment, looking directly into my eyes, smiling. I don't remember what he said, but his hands felt warm. . .and I think Reagan won that year.

...he is one of the last true heroes....and it hurts even more because he was a local lad made good....I had the honor of making the Colonel's acquaintance when I was in college back in the 80's....he was stopping by Muskingum and I covered it for the local news....very unassuming and he never seemed to forget he came from small-town America.....

My heroes have been astronauts since I was a kid. I always hate their passing. It is as if the best of man is leaving us to our earth bound squabbling. Reaching beyond ourselves is never squandering. Not reaching is squandering our potential.

I ate many a meal out of this while thinking of John and Neil and wondering how far we would get by the time I was my age now. A shame we have not gotten farther.
