MCEscher, Tessellators and Tessellations

Hi. Growing up (ha) for me there were several graphic artists I could not get enough of. Maurits Cornelis Escher, or MCEscher, was one of my art heroes. Here's a thread dedicated to him, to other artists with a similar bent, and examples of the artistic practice, or game if you will, known as "tessellation"…

This is one of my favorite pieces of Escher's - I have a tat of it on my right shoulder. The piece is titled "Mummified Frog," and it's not what people normally think of in relation to his work:

Why is this not a tessellation?

I thought it had to be the same figures (i.e., fish or birds, or horses in different colors). Since this is fish and birds, I thought it didn't count--I certainly could be wrong!

There are a variety of types of them, as I understand their definition, including some found in nature…
