Molecular assemblers in science fiction

I recently read an article in Discover Magizine that got me thinking about this crazy device called Molecular Assemblers. Movies like the recent Trancendence and 2008 movie The Day The Eaarth Stood Still, portray the MA as a grey 'goo' which attaches and morphs itself into things.
