I'm sure most of you have heard of "The Field of Dreams" maybe even "The Grotto of the Redemption" in West Bend IA. But a must see if you're ever in the SW corner of the state is
"The Villisca Axe Murder House". Now we talking baby!
Probably Halloween wouldn't be the best time to visit because they're overun with visitors and ghost hunters at that time.
Once again if you do a search on Google Maps and keyin Villisca Axe it will comeup as a choice right away. And of course this attraction has it's own website as follows: The Official Site of the Villisca Axe Murders of 1912

Omaha is in the same area. Maybe I'll see you there :)

I'm not trying to be difficult here, but why would this be a tourist attraction for Stephen King fans? Because someone was killed with an axe?? Stephen King is not just a horror writer, and I would venture to say that the majority of his fans don't seek out sites where people were gruesomely killed. There, I said it. I feel better now. Thank you.

Now, if somebody was killed with a roque mallet, well, that would be different. ;)

Curious reading..."the suspects" in the case. Horrible crimes...ax murders. Curious and sad, too, that every hobo, transient and otherwise unaccounted for stranger was also a suspect in the Axe Murders. Sounds like there was a serial ax murderer in the...or is that just more wishful thinking...has to be just one doing it all...no way it could possibly happen again and again.
Lived in Iowa for a time or two...Des Moines, North Liberty...saw the game that was Bo's last year...the tie...as well as the double-OT win for the Big Cheese (Go Blue.) at Carver-Hawkeye...Iowa had that coach who reminded me of Barney Rubble.

An axe was prominently featured in "The Shining". I know the roque croquet mallet was left out of Kubrick's cinematic version. Well Stanley got to have his vision and Stephen had his made for TV movie vision. Battle of the SK's eh? As far as a choice of weapons goes, suppose you're Bruce Lee and faced with 3 dangerous thugs 1 with an axe, 1 with a chainsaw and 1 with a crochet mallet. Who do you take out 1st? I'm thinking the guy with a crochet mallet has 3rd place wrapped up. :)

Not going to enter that battlefield but just as an aside, we have the roque mallet prop from the mini-series version here at our office. =D

There's a parallel that just came to me. The Overlook Hotel and The Villisca Axe Murder House have a lot in common. They both seem to have become evil sentient beings with a will all their own.

And could you change crochet to croquet? That's pretty funny when I think about it. Rogue crochet???

Perhaps Lizzie Borden were there on vacation or something. I know, i know, she was ruled innocent at the trial but still....

Done. I'd thought it was roque with a "q" not a "g"--roque being the American variant of croquet--but agree a rogue crochet is definitely a horse of a different color! ;-D

That would be for making those really big afghans (the kind for the King sized beds!~)
