...though not to Mr. King's work. I recently started reading his work again, rereading some, reading some new stuff. Been a while. Like revisiting an old friend. The first thing I read of his was "It" back in 87 or 88, while in college. Scariest book I'd ever read - and I love scary books (I was led to it by an Uncle, my favorite Uncle, who loved Mr. King's books - even though all of his works were banned in the home in which I was raised). For several years I read everything available, then got busy with work, marriage, kids and other reading (I'm something of an omnivore when it comes to reading - easily my preferred pastime).

But even with all that, I exposed my kids (I have seven of them) to his work through movies and tv (they, sadly, don't read like I do). Several years ago I started it by letting the older ones (15-10 years old - four of them) watch the old Silver Bullet movie. I still remember the last gasp of the werewolf at the end and how I didn't warn them it was coming and all the screams and jumps when it happened. Since then I've used a variety of means to expose them to his video heritage. I haven't been able to find a means to show them Salem's Lot, or the Shining. But we've watched Bag of Bones, The Stand, Stand By Me, Mercy, The Running Man, Night Shift, The Green Mile, It, The Dark Half, Needful Things, The Dream Catcher, Christine, and most recently, the new Carrie.

I decided to get back into his books after reading Hannibal and seeing his plug on the cover. It drew me back to his works. Been on a binge since. Hope to be able to contribute to this forum. I write a small amount - but only for private consumption. And I think Mr. King has been a significant influence on the way I write; certainly on the way I evaluate writing.

Basics about me, married, for 21 years, 7 kids, the oldest is a Marine, the next four are in the four years of high school, freshman through senior (we had them close), then two more that are younger. I'm 48, live in Idaho, in the town I grew up in. I went to West Point in 1985, graduated in 89, spent five years as a cavalry officer, resigned, went to Harvard Law School in 94, graduated in 97, worked in a 300 lawyer firm in Boston until 2002, then paid school debt down enough to move home. Opened my own practice in my small town, and have been doing general practice here since then. I'm politically conservative and religiously a born again fundamental Baptist.

Regards to all,

Kelly

Thank you to everyone. I have to tell you that every time I read something by King, I'm reminded again about how good a writer he is. That happens with certain authors: you know they're good, but forget how good until you revisit them. That also happens when I read Twain, Hemingway, Conrad and Dickens (wordy, but wow, what words). The quality of his writing is what draws me back - and the fact that the frisson of fear that he often inspires is something I truly enjoy. I love scary stories.
