Newbie here, although I've been reading King's books for many years. Favourite books have been 'Salem's Lot and Duma Key for genuine "so scared I had to put the book away till I stopped freaking out" moments.

My first book was Christine, many, many years ago and that one set the precedent for getting totally, obsessively, immersed in his books (much like Arnie with his car, scarily enough). Can't call myself a true fan yet as I've not attempted The Stand (which I see many people rate as his best) due to its immense number of pages - will need to save that for a long holiday. Is it weird that Stephen's books are my usual "holiday read" - as a girl, I should probably be reading Bridget Jones or other dire 'women's' books but they just don't appeal to my dark soul as much ;)

Greetings and welcome to the board. If you are taking a break between King's work, try J. A. Jance. I started with Hour of the Hunter, author suggestion when we met and now I read one of hers between books I am reading.
