Apparently, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford hated each other's guts in real life, so they didn't have to act. One of them were nominated in 1962.
Joan Crawford campaigned behind the scenes to make sure Bette wouldn't get the Oscar for Baby Jane. Bette found out and the sh*t hit the fan! According to Bette, her rivalry with Joan came from the fact (according to Bette now, don't come after me for this) that Joan had made advances towards Bette in the early stages of their careers when they were both becoming big stars, which Bette rebuffed, and Joan despised her for it all those years. The Oscar should have gone to whoever had the brilliant idea to cast the two of them in this movie- perfect enemies who would give their best to top the other one!

I remember reading about this and I believe it to be true. And you're right The Oscar should have gone to the brilliant mind that casted the two.
