Consider:

[He] wondered how it would be to lie in the biggest, dustiest library silence of all, dreaming endless, thoughtless dreams behind gummed-down eyelids, dressed forever in your Sunday suit. No worries about money, success, fear, joy, pain, sorrow, sex or love. Absolute zero. No father, mother, girlfriend, lover. The dead are orphans. No company but the silence like a moth's wing. An end to tbe agony of movement, to the long nightime of . . . The body in peace, stillness, and order. The perfect darkness of death.

Think you know horror? Can you guess who wrote the passage above? From the five writers listed, pick your choice and indicate above. The answer I'll reveal later. Note: If you know the answer, vote but please don't reveal it here. The choices are

Clive Barker, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Richard Matheson, Carson McCullers

Okay, I'll bite. I didn't cheat, either - I didn't look it up on the 'net. I chose Carson McCullers because she wasn't known for horror (not exactly, although The Heart is a Lonely Hunter could arguably be a story about Hell on Earth).

Is my guess correct?
Thanks. McCullers was Southern Gothic which is a type of horror. Will reveal the answer later.

Not many responses. I was hoping to interest more of you. The selection was written by Richard Bachman (technically Stephen King),and you can find it in The Long Walk. We're talking early King here. He states that he began this in freshman college. My point is that even this early there were already intimations of greatness. Thanks to those who voted.

Technically Stephen King's alter ego? :semi-twins:
