Sargeant Shriver had Alheimer's and Maria called it "the long goodbye." I think it's a devastating disease, especially for the loved ones. I know it's awful for the person going through it, popping in and out of awareness, knowing you are failing--but the ones who fall completely into the rabbit hole and aren't aware anymore, they just live in a shell. The people in their lives have to look at this shell and be constantly reminded of the vibrant person that used to dwell there.

This brings back bad memories for me. 2001 - 2003 - looking after my Dad and watching him slowly get worse. I wish they had a blood test or something to predict if you will get this disease and hopefully do something to slow it down or prevent it. Believe me, I am eating my salmon and taking fish oil and keeping my fingers crossed!
