I want to get a small dog but I know absolutely nothing about house training. Anyone have any suggestions?
Lots of newspaper and patience. :) Puppies will normally do their business right after waking up and again after a feed, so try to anticipate when they might need to go and get them outside quickly. When they are successful... lots of praise, when they mess up (Yar, how's that for a pun?) try not to make a big deal out of it... you don't want them to start 'fear toileting'.

I wouldn't expect a puppy to be fully house trained until well after 4 months or more.

Ha - don't get a small dog. They can't hold their potty very long. Medium mutts are the best. And older is better too - no puppies, a nice 2 year old will do ya fine! We always get a dog from the shelter.
Thanks Holly - can you guess which breed I was thinking of? (big clue is in my avatar :tongue-new:) - is that considered a "small dog" or a medium dog? - I did have a Boston terrier (9 years old) that I got from the Humane Society and he was a great dog but unfortunately he got ill and had to be taken to the vet. He died and this was back in the 90s. I haven't been able to get another dog since.
:( I think I may wait until I am ready for retirement and see how things go then.

I think that's a great idea Neesy, dogs are such social creatures and do crave (and need) attention. :)

Pugs are great Neesy but they are considered small dogs. Mine is about 2 1/2 and most times he does well but I confine him to my room or his crate when I am not home. I am thinking about getting another one for companionship for taz (my baby) while I work.
