We probably should have a link to Dead or Alive for you so you can check out whether they're really dead or not. There have been more than a few times when I've heard about someone dying and thinking I thought they were already dead.

I've worked with people who I thought were dead. Then they'd climb out of the casket.

It is the most recent one I read, so maybe that is why I remembered that quote "Something happened" from the book.
