I'm surprised that no one ever started a thread about this. Today I bought a LED book light from Chapters. It was fine at first. No buzzing noise, no overheating or anything. But I turned it off and on 3 times in one evening. I think I must've worn it out. Suddenly it made a popping sound that reminded me of an old-fashioned camera in a period film. There was no smoke, no fire. But it freaked me out enough so that I never wanted to use it again.

I think I will just go back to using my table lamp. When I remove the shade, it gives me proper light for reading that I can't get from the ceiling light alone. I don't want to wreck my vision. I also have a desk lamp, but it gets too hot and that makes me very nervous.

What sort of lamp do you use for reading?

...one of these works just fine.....has LED bulbs, use AAA batteries and the clamp secures it to your book with no damage....

I bought one of those little clip-on book lights - mine looks like a monkey - you plug it in to a USB port to recharge it.

It's okay but I actually prefer using a lamp in my bedroom. I have several - two on one side of the bed and another on the other side, on a night table.

I've actually started ordered the large type books if they are available - less strain on my eyes.

My Dad had macular degeneration so I'm hoping I don't end up with it. I'm careful about protecting my eyes with sunglasses when outside.

I use a crappy cheap thing but it clips on to my bed and has one of those turny snake thingys so I can reposition it however I move. I use a 40-watt bulb (incandescent...once it burns out I will update to the screw in LED lights (unless there are more of the old ones in the basement)).
You can still buy those old fashioned incandescent bulbs at Pollock's Hardware - they specialize in all those old school things.

I won't buy anymore but I will use up what I've got, then I'll do my part in saving the world by spending way more money on those screw type in new ones.
