I hadn't heard this... I am however, really pleased that I have (as you say) so many new books ahead of me.
But.... hey Hunter, [ goathunter] any possibility of asking Mr. McCammon if he wouldn't mind slinging a few titles to New Zealand? They're awfully difficult to pick up in this area. :biggrin2:

I came across a bookstore in Alabama that sells many signed copies (paper and hard cover) of McCammon's books. I've dealt with them and they do a very efficient job shipping. Not sure about international shipping, but folks might want to check them out: Signed Copies | Alabama Booksmith

I can see why he would be frustrated by that, but honestly--most themes have been done by so many, that pretty much anything can be seen as having already been written by another author.

Sure. I know that, and part of the problem was the King was/is so prolific that there were/are few areas he hadn't touched on that wouldn't be similar to what other people were doing. But there was a time when it seemed almost every review of a McCammon novel included some line about King doing it first or the book reminded the reviewer of King. That has died down over the years, but it was very real in the late '80s and early '90s, and as he said, it's like some of the crazier diehards wanted them to fight or something. It was weird.

(P.S also, I was completely joking about what I said earlier. :biggrin2: )

;-D

Bought The Five when i bought Finders Keepers today. Couldn't resist the oppurtunity. First book i've seen by McCammon here in Sweden. Is it any good?

Yes, The Five is good. It isn't my favorite but that's because I'm not a big rock music fan and the 'stars' in this story are in a band.
I have The Five but have never really looked at it-- a novel about rock music/a band sounds right up my alley.

Just wondered about opinions about Baal, Bethanys Sin, Ushers Passing, Night Boat and Mystery Walk. Are they as good as the ones i read? I read They Thirst, Boys Life, Wolfs Hour, Speaks the Nightbird and just started Swan Song. I like them all. Have Stinger and Mine waiting in my TBR-list. But are the books i mentioned first as good as the rest? And as different? His books differ a lot from eachother in tone. Glad for opinions and advice.
I really liked Swan Song. I think you'll enjoy it (or perhaps you're done reading it now).

So far, Boy's Life has been my favorite of the few I've read (Boy's Life, Swan Song, Speaks the Nightbird, They Thirst), but all of them have been at least a good, solid story. I have Usher's Passing and Blue World sitting on my shelf and hope to get to them by the end of summer :)

I loved The Five!

Just finished reading his latest book.

The Border by Robert McCammon

A SF romp that truly has echoes of McCammon's previous apocalyptic novel - Swan Song. This a straight forward action story with some mild ideological underpinnings. Two warring races - the Gorgons and the Cyphers - are in the process of destroying Earth which has the bad luck of being on the border of their respective races claimed territory - remain pretty alien. Which reduces their roles in the story to very traditional antagonists.

The real power of the story lies expectedly with the human survivors and their amazing ability to truck ahead under the most dire of circumstances. That, and a third alien party - who even though he is beyond human comprehension - reports to an even higher power, he in turn does not understand. Taking on the body of a young teenage boy near death - Ethan comes to learn and appreciate the worthiness of saving the human race.

So many terrible things happen to people and Earth that it becomes apparent early on that the story can only take one direction. And it does. Which both takes the tension down a notch but delivers the payoff a reader wants to see.

McCammon is always a fun writer to read. And I hear his next Matthew Corbett novel - FREEDOM OF THE MASK - clocks in at 180,000 words. Can't wait!

I just finished The Border maybe last week and I enjoyed it a lot. Not as much as Boy's Life, Swan Song or Ushers Passing, but I did like it all the way through. The book of his I could not finish was Gone South. Maybe it was partly my mood while reading it I dunno, it was just too darn depressing!! I made it over half way and just could not keep going.
