Devo is one of my three favorite bands (the other two being Cheap Trick and The Monkees; I define favorite in the sense that I have gone beyond the radio hits and into the deep catalog). Looks like the band did not make it, but that is certainly okay. The groups that did are very good, indeed. Also, I am not one to defend any group/musician I like, as I am usually objective (i.e., Bun E. Carlos is probably my favorite drummer, but for reasons other than just skill; I would never say he is underrated, as he is most likely appropriately rated relative to others like Peart or Simon Phillips). They just have meaning for me.
I will say, though, about Devo, for those who know anything about the science-fiction mythology the band created for itself, that they turned out to be prophets in a sense (Are we not men! We are Devo! if you know what I mean). Also, on the rock 'n roll thing, I see the point, yet -- consider the one hit most know, Whip It. I've read the hook was influenced by Pretty Woman. Seems true to me. The album it was on, Freedom of Choice, has a rock feel to it, especially a song called It's Not Right, which almost sounds like an oldie (a de-evolved oldie, of course!). Anyway, congrats to the new members, look forward to their performances...
