So all of my books are protected in BroDart mylar. Very solid and decent book shelf. Problem is that my office has bay windows that my wife loves to open whenever possible. So now my OCD is kicking in and the fear of sun damage is taking hold of my fragile mind.

I have thought about getting some black fabric and creating a makeshift curtain of sorts to mount into my book shelf. I think it will help with direct sunlight, but is that enough to block out UV?

Pondering.

lol, that's not OCD, that's love :) This is OCD... I've photocopied jacket covers for books that get too much sun so that the photocopy gets sun damaged rather than the original cover :)

LOL! That's a brilliant idea! Then I could still see all of them neatly on the shelf instead of hiding them! Only problem is that they are all in mylar protectors...I will have to take each one out individually, photocopy them and then cut the copies down to size and put all of them back in the mylar covers....One...by...One.

I wonder if asking someone at a library or bookstore about UV light might help.

Good idea. I will check. I am really motivated to also start making my own custom (hopefully high quality) slipcases for all of my hardcover books. The only thing I can not figure out yet is a DIY foil stamping method where I could come up with an SK logo and book title to put on all of them.

Even with UV-blocking mylar covers, sun will eventually fade/damage the dustjacket. If you are referring to the early Doubleday books (Carrie-The Stand), here's what I did: I placed the original dj's in a Brodart cover and put them on the book. I purchased bookclub editions of the books, took those dustjackets, placed them in their own Brodart covers and put those over top of the regular dustjackets. They look exactly the same as the original covers and now they are even more protected from damage from light. By purchasing the bookclub versions, you'll be saving yourself time and probably money. I like your idea of the curtain- it will also help keep dust off of the books! Otherwise, get those books as far away from the sun as you can.

Agreed! I collect dolls, and I have them in a room with light blocking curtains on the windows. Same idea. But it's hard when you're sharing your space with someone else who has different ideas about ambiance. I open the blinds in every other room of the house with gusto whenever I'm home during the day, and that annoys my husband, who prefers to live like a vampire/cave dweller. I love the idea of making faux bookcovers. It's a lot of work, but just think how awesome it will look when you're done!

Yes my wife and I share an office. She likes the blinds open. I don't.

If I can start making my own custom slipcases, I can simply turn them around so the exposed dust jackets are not in direct sunlight or UV. That is why I have been trying to figure out how to hot foil stamp lettering. It is the only thing I can not figure out how to do. Found distributor for book board, faux leather, etc. But short of spending a small fortune on an industrial hot foil machine and die cutting machine I have no idea how I can actually label the slipcases nicely.

Asking questions about crafts on a Stephen King board might seem senseless but a bunch of us do crafts - there's even a Crafts thread :) Can We Show Off Our Crafts? | The StephenKing.com Message Board

If the leather you're using can be stamped, alphabet stamping tools are inexpensive. Craft stores sell gold and silver embossing powder which can be glued to the surface but you might need a heat gun to set the powder and it sounds messy. I think I'd try using one of those metallic felt tip pens first on a scrap piece of leather. If your handwriting is good, you could even skip the leather stamps :)

If you ask on the Crafts thread, you will probably get better answers than mine lol
