The big question is how the police were clued in to this guy after 40 years as a suspect. Did some friend or family member have cause to suspect him and tip them off? There is also speculation that some family member may have submitted DNA to one of those DNA ancestry companies and the police somehow were able to link it as a family member to the suspect. That would raise some interesting privacy issues. A distant relative might also have been arrested and the DNA was close enough that the authorities could track down who in that family it might be. There was an excellent series on the case recently on ID channel (I think) attempting to revive interest in the case. The timing of the arrest after 40 years might be related. The number and brutality of the crimes was striking. Particularly since it did not generate the same type of media interest as many other serial killers. Likely because it took so long to understand that many of the cases were committed by the same person. That didn't happen until decades after most of these crimes were committed when DNA analysis linked them. Anyone reminded of Frank Dodd here with his association as a police officer during the time some of these crimes were committed?

I'm sure one of these days, there is going to be a big legal battle over those ancestry databases where law enforcement is going to want access.

When I was a kid, we had a serial killer cop in our county.

Gerard John Schaefer - Wikipedia
Good Lord..what is really disturbing is the ex girlfriend that "interviewed" him and published his creepy stories, then she moved on to another relationship with another serial killer?! What goes through people's heads..as for this guy, glad he was quickly found out and stripped of his badge, which often happens with killer cops, they somehow make it through the initial screening process but actually doing the job eventually exposes them, the stress or something makes them crack..disturbing also that he was able to kill so many before they were on to him, after he abducted the girls while on duty..

Going to be interesting to see what tipped them off, hope they reveal that soon,if there is a probable cause hearing in the next week or so,they will then..in addition to the above, from the story it sounds like he was burglarizing and robbing his victim as well,I wonder if maybe he needed money and tried to pawn something that was valuable from them, and they got him that way..it could be any number of things though, guess we will find out eventually..

Also, the wife of Schaefer divorced him during the trial and married the defense attorney.
