    Hi all! I'm not native reader, so I cannot understand the essence of the following phrase:

    "I’m sure it was the Portland SundayTelegram that did the piece on the Mormons that showed up over in Freeport and tried to sink a mine in the Desert of Maine…"

    What could be the reason to sink a mine in the Desert of Maine? Can somebody explain it to me?

    Sure, I meant Chapter 3, 4th paragraph.
