Does anybody else here remember The Others, a brilliant, suspenseful television series originally broadcast in 2000? I have just started rewatching my old DVDs (recorded from the TV, unfortunately, as it has never been officially released) and it is SO much fun! I’m sure that many of you here would thoroughly enjoy it - if you are looking for a good new TV series to get into, I can recommend this one highly!

It is about a group of people with psychic or supernatural abilities, and it belongs in that wonderful place just outside the horror genre - more of a really good ghost story with a lot of intrigue, mystery, suspense and a good few scares in every episode. :) One of the highlights of this programme is the superb cast - a mixture of big names and relative unknowns, but they are all wonderful in their roles and really make this group of characters come alive. The venerable Bill Cobbs plays the leader of the group, a wise old grandfatherly figure who understands the supernatural world well and helps the less experienced members of the group feel their way through their strange powers and the mysterious and frightening situations in which they find themselves. Kevin O’Connor plays a sort of idiot savant, a fragile young fellow with a marginal existence but with great supernatural ability and understanding. John Aylward plays an elderly blind man, the curmudgeon of the group (I particularly liked this touch. Quite daring of them to have such an “unlikable” character among their main group. He is not a gruff old boy with a soft centre - he is rude, aggressive and nasty, and adds such a lot to the drama, the colour and the tension of the characters!). Julianne Nicholson plays a young woman who is only just discovering her psychic abilities, and is pretty shocked to find herself experiencing things that would have most psychiatrists reaching for the straightjacket and the keys to the locked ward.

The group operate as a sort of psychic detective agency/exorcists for hire/help for troubled and restless spirits. Nothing massively original perhaps, but it is extremely enjoyable and highly entertaining! I first saw this series when it was broadcast in the UK in 2003, and, lover of good ghost stories that I am, it was the best new programme I had seen on the box for quite a few years! It is gorgeously spooky - the suspense is handled so well, and the central group of characters are believable, colourful and appealing. I would almost go so far as to say that they feel like old friends from the get-go. It is also visually beautiful, being set in the world of old Boston colleges on spooky evenings…

I am sure that a lot of the members here would enjoy it. I won’t post a link, but if you care to take a wander over to YouTube and type “The Others S01E01” into the box, hours of televisual spookiness and suspense at its best await!
