I know there have always been gay and transgendered people. But I am amazed that 100 years ago a doctor was offering therapy and surgery.

As a young teen I knew someone who was referred to as a cross-dresser. And maybe he was....or maybe she was trans. Gay men I knew when I was in my twenties....things I now recall them saying, makes me wonder if they are trans as well.

I think indigenous people used to say these people had 'two spirits' and they were accepted for what they were. (But to be honest I don't know a lot about Aboriginal history and culture).

I remember reading years ago that in some tribes of indigenous people here in the States that homosexual men were treated with great reverence and respect.

Something happened today.

My granddaughter is 10. At school they are doing a lot of anti-bullying stuff. Went to WeDay, going to see Wonder, etc.

She has to do a project. They make a “human” that has been bullied. They have to write a back story about the person. She is making a pink “human” that is transgender. Pink is because he was born female. She has also decided he has a twin brother who is not trans. She says to me... “he’s...I don’t know the word. You know, when a person is interested in boys and girls....what’s that word?”

Other than answering that question I just let her ramble. She went on and on about how people feel offended because they don’t understand when a person is trans or bi-sexual and so they bully them.

She is so proud....she’s the only one in the class that chose that back story.

You should be proud of her. That's great that she's doing this.

Absolutely. Told her I am too. I admit I am a bit curious why this would be her choice. I hadn’t expected trans or bi to be something she was fully aware of.
Kids know a lot more than we give them credit for these days. I know when I was a child (way back in the 60's) my Mom would have been shocked at what I was aware of.

I’ve been thinking, and I recall her mom telling me she had an aunt who was trans. It’s possible she talked about her to the kids. (The aunt died before the kids were born.)
