After looking at hundreds of bird pictures, I think I've identified the bird I saw on Friday. Its way off course... we live nowhere near the Atlantic but there is a good-sized bass lake ten miles up the road so maybe it wintered there. (photo is from wiki)

I was wondering if it might have been a lost sea gull of some sort. We live a couple hours from the ocean. Sometimes when the weather is weird or seasons change we get gulls in vast parking lots scarfing up french fries from McDonalds. People must pull over and eat at this spot because the group hovers and then they 'fight over' tossed fries.

Yesterday, I discovered we have a bluebird nest on the front porch! You can't see them well because the overhang causes too much shadow but they are sooooooo cute! :)

I did not know bluebirds built nests like that (like a swallow) - is it a "bluebird of happiness"?

Hmmmmmmm... Maybe it is a swallow... my bird identification skills are still the pits lol. I guessed it was a bluebird cause it was blue with a red throat and chest, and a white tummy, But... the throat and chest are more red than the pics of bluebirds I found online so it could be anything lol. I'll try to get a pic of one in sunlight.

It makes me happy :)

I looked up bluebirds (which I have never seen in real life) and they look similar to the one that is flying to the nest in your picture - lucky you! I love birds :love_heart:

Thats it! Thanks Nessy :) They do look a lot like barn swallows, I kinda assumed the bluebirds I saw in the back yard were the ones building the nest on the front porch but I'm thinking now that the ones on the porch are probably barn swallows. I wish I had a good camera... our grumpy blue heron has returned and it does not seem to be very happy about having to share its pond with the great egret that's been around since January. It follows the egret around and flaps its wings at it... or maybe it likes the egret? They're the same size, could they breed?

Don't ask me - I somehow doubt it, though!
