Fl roads/ hwys/ interstates are occupied with people driving a car with a cell phone attached to their ear. Their brains engaged in conversation and little attention to the numerous cars around them. All too often one will see the driver in front/ or to the side realize they need to turn and cross several lanes to accomplish it. Cell phone attached to ear and talking to cyber space. Reprehensible indeed.

I'm all for getting distracted drivers off the road, but what he was doing was illegal and potentially dangerous--can you imagine if your 911 call got cut off because of this moron?

That was the first thing that came to my mind. What if a true emergency is going on? How about a person who's being responsible, pulling to the side of the road, and still gets the call cut off? It's legal to use the cell in the car here, and I do, and for focused purposes, not just to chat or catch up. If I get cut off, which happens a fair amount on lonely Wyoming roads, I get more distracted because I'm looking to see what happened with the phone and am redialing (archaic term).

Among my many fixes to society when I become dictator is that to operate a phone in the car, you have to be licensed to do so, which means that you have to pass a knowledge and skills test if you want that endorsement on your license. And the test wouldn't be easy.

In GA there might soon be a law fining drivers who won't move from a lane meant for people driving faster out of their way, from a left lane to a right lane. This thread is reminiscent to me of the blight of the cellphone driver in the "fast" lane; a societal perversion more prevalent in Atlanta than anywhere else in the world, according to some study I heard about. Many incidences of road rage not to mention major auto accidents and serious commuting delays are caused by such drivers in this city.

Imho, most laws, if not good, are at least well-intentioned. I think laws restricting cellphone blockers are good for reasons already voiced here. By the same token there are good laws restricting while-driving cellphone use in GA; one of which is that it's illegal to use a handheld cellphone while driving. It has to be as headset. This says driving while talking on a handheld cellphone is too dangerous, stop it dammit!!! Now, how well those laws will be enforced will remain to be seen. I think for the most part the cops don't take the headset one seriously at all.

Cell phone use in cars drives me crazy too! Unfortunately, we can't make lack of common sense a crime. I wish we could though.
I don't really know what the law is in Ontario, but here in Manitoba it has been illegal to drive and use a cell phone without an ear piece for quite a long time now. (Now if only they could enforce it better!)

ooops - just saw your later post - like you said, even if it is illegal, some people just can't stop themselves from using their phones
