Having recently been diagnosed, I have checked out some reading material on the matter. I almost wished I hadn't; it is outdated and a little sensationalist. My PA does not seem to know a whole lot about it, and I'm scaring myself reading articles about it. All I know, is that I am very sore right now. The treatment was delayed for three weeks, because the first test came back negative. She didn't give me the Doxy until the second test came back positive.
I have found that this message board is filled with intelligent and experienced people. Does anybody have any experience with this disease? What can I do to minimize the symptoms? I don't want to read anymore articles unless they are from a valid source (I'm worried I will start seeing zebras!)
I really appreciate your help in advance.

Edit comma splice if possible! See, it's already manifesting itself in the grammatical part of my brain!

Hi Nomik! Don't google! My youngest daughter had 3 tiny deer ticks on her - and I had to wrestle with her to get them off - she was 5. It was a Saturday, so I called our pediatrician the following Monday and he said just keep an eye on her for any symptoms. About a month afterwards, I noticed a bulls eye rash on her back (not where the ticks were). So I took her in and based on the rash he decided to go ahead and start antibiotics - I think it was doxycycline, and he sent her for blood work. 2 of the 3 markers were positive. She never complained of any symptoms and after six weeks of antibiotic, we pretty much forgot about it. I've had friends do the same - found a rash, took the meds, all is well. From what I understand, it's a very hard bacteria to kill, and could take months of antibiotic. Keep yourself healthy while you are on the meds - eat well, sleep well, use probiotics to control any side effects from the meds. I think the big problems come from untreated Lyme disease. Some people never get the rash or see the ticks (those deer ticks are tiny tiny ticks), so they don't connect any illness with a tick bite and they don't get the proper treatment. You're on top it. I do wish the PA had gone ahead and assumed you had Lyme and gotten you on antibiotics earlier while waiting on the test results, you would be on the healing end of it by now if she had. You're going to be OK!

The key to a successful full recovery is it being diagnosed early. Yours appears to have been caught early on. My one daughter and my brother both contracted Lyme Disease. I’ll refrain from telling the horror stories they endured. If you are given the option for a short treatment versus the longer treatment, I’d say opt for the longer treatment. And I second the probiotics supplement while on antibiotics. Good luck.

Thank you Holly! That is the kind of information that I need. I appreciate your taking the time to give me this response. It eases my mind somewhat. I had the rash at first, and she gave me antibiotics for the rash, but they were not the kind that treat Lyme. So far, my only symptom is pretty severe joint pain; I feel like I aged 20 years overnight! I was vacuuming with a handheld vacuum the other day, and suddenly my wrist hurt so much that I had to stop. I woke up three times last night whimpering, with shooting pains in my legs. I've heard that there is a supplement that might help with this, it's called glucosamine chondroitin msm. I didn't see it at the grocery store, so I'll try the pharmacy next.
Thanks again for the information and the anecdote.

Okay, since I have GI problems to begin with the probiotics sound like a good idea. I certainly wish they were cheaper! Thank you so much for the advice, Dio!

I think I'm on the Doxy for three weeks at this point. Is that considered the short or the long option?

We found Sam's Club had a good offering - Digestive Advantage Probiotic Gummies (120 count)... $19.98.

I believe three weeks is the short treatment. Maybe they opted for the short treatment because of how early it was detected.

The glucosamine should help with the joint pain. Any Walmart or pharmacy will have it and you can get their version (usually cheaper) with the same results. Healing vibes your way. (((Nomik)))

Thank you both! We do have a Walmart in Derry. Kevin avoids it on principle, but I'm okay with getting something I need at a good price.

I'll talk to my PA after the treatment is theough.
I did find a clinic in North Andover Massachusetts, but the cost is absolutely unreal! Hopefully, the Doxy will knock it out. I don't have celebrity money to go to some fancy-schmancy Lyme clinic.

If you spend time reading all the available info you will come out with some wrong sense of direction based on bad info. This is a complicated issue and it takes a lot of time to study and get it right. Many people will read for a couple days and think they know all about it. It took me 5 years of rading Microbiology and genetics to get it right;

If you read that party line stuff from the mayo clinic you will be lost. Like I said this subject takes a lot more than 10 minutes of google to understand.

....sorry, I missed your medical degree on the cyber wall over there....also I'm a nurse with years of experience and a great deal of respect for the quality of work from the Mayo Clinic....plus, I didn't post it to be the absolute cure or font of wisdom, just as another avenue to explore.....so in other words, try to summon up a bit of respect for others when you come into a new "neighborhood".....

A medical degree means nothing. I had Lyme and went to seven doctors and they were useless. Doctors don't understand Lyme at all , western medicine is a for profit system not a health care system , sorry for you that you are part of that lie.
