I think anything recognizable but abnormally or perversely enormous seems at once alien while familiar, like science fiction, and is creepy because of the conflicting emotions resulting from seeing something alien but also familiar.

I'm pretty much afraid of anything enormous.... I used to be terrified of the huge whale in the museum (just like the movie, if you've seen it...) ... I probably would still be nervous even just looking at it... because it's dark in there. The elephant when you walked in didn't bother me.
