Thanks, Vulture.
I was looking for the author/title of a short story I'd read over 25 years ago. The premiss is that a poor child goes to a carnival of sorts in the hopes of winning a chance to spin a wheel of fortune, the proceeds of which he would use to buy his mother medicine. The ending (no spoilers) involves the child getting a chance to spin the wheel, then holding the button down and realizing that, as long as he didn't let go of the button, the wheel wouldn't stop - and he couldn't lose.
Wish I had more details, but it was a long time ago, and I haven't been able to find anything resembling it since. It was in a book, perhaps a compilation of short stories or O. Henry winners. I've been looking for it for years. If anyone has any idea of what it may be, I'll follow up all leads. The worst thing that can happen if I am sent in the wrong direction is that I'll have to read short stories, so I win either way.
Thanks for asking!
