It goes back to Greek mythology. Here's the explanation from LiveScience (one of my favorite sites :D):
The image of serpents wrapped around a staff is a familiar one in the medical field, decorating pharmaceutical packaging and hospitals alike. Snakes bites are generally bad news, and so the animal might seem ill-fitting as the symbol of the medical profession, but the ancient emblem actually has a quite a story behind it.

There are actually two versions of the symbol. The winged version is known as a caduceus, andthe stick is actually a staff that was carried by the Olympian god Hermes. In Greek mythology, Hermes was a messenger between the gods and humans (which explains the wings) and a guide to the underworld (which explains the staff). Hermes was also the patron of travelers, which makes his connection to medicine appropriate because, in the olden days, doctors had to travel great distances by foot in order to visit their patients.
In one version of Hermes' myth, he is given the staff by Apollo, the god of healing . In another version, he receives the staff from Zeus, the king of the gods, and it is entwined with two white ribbons. The ribbons were later replaced by serpents, as one story tells that Hermes used the stick to separate two fighting snakes , who then coiled around his staff and remained there in balanced harmony.

Another, earlier depiction of the medical symbol is the staff of Asclepius, thought it has no wings and only one snake. The son of Apollo and the human princess Coronis, Asclepius is the Greek demigod of medicine . According to mythology, he was able to restore the health of the sick and bring the dead back to life.

In one telling, Zeus killed Asclepius with a thunderbolt for disrupting the natural order of the world by reviving the dead, while another version states that Zeus killed him as punishment for accepting money in exchange for conducting a resurrection. After he died, Zeus placed Asclepius among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus, or "the serpent bearer."

The Greeks regarded snakes as sacred and used them in healing rituals to honor Asclepius, as snake venom was thought to be remedial and their skin-shedding was viewed as a symbol of rebirth and renewal. Which is a good thing to keep in mind the next time you spot a medical alert bracelet featuring the seemingly sinister serpents.
Very cool - thanks!

Country. I have enjoyed fast times in cities but I'm country raised and it is there I call home.

Rockies or Smokies?
I like Rocky Road ice cream and Smokies on the grill/BBQ

If you mean the mountains, I guess I will pick the Rockies (I was in Banff Alberta and the scenery was lovely).

Go out to a memorial service for Veterans or watch it on the 'telly'?

Our Veterans Day parade was on Saturday, and I was at the book thing :( Thinking a lot about my veteran ancestors--the first one I know of fought in the Revolutionary War.

Do you celebrate the holiday?

I used to have to go on parade every Remembrance Day (for 21 years). Now I just watch it on TV. I might go to the Legion later (there is one right at the end our our street).

Have you ever unintentionally offended or 'stepped on the toes' of someone on the Internet?

Oh, most definitely. Having said that, it's probably more often the case that I intentionally go outta my way to offend someone or step on their toes. I'm easily irritated by other people, and I'm not a student of the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" school of thought. At least not online where the blow is cushioned by the screen.

Don't you hate it when celebrities get political and try to shove their political opinions down your throat?

I hate to admit it, but yes. It's the only computer/camera/game player I use. Rarely use it for actual calls though.

How do you mostly communicate with people (when not with them)? Phone calls, texts, email, etc?
Text. I prefer avoiding others as much as possible - writing (texting) buys me time.

Metaphysically, how do you define positive vs negative?

I try to develop my inner "third eye" by opening myself to the energies of the natural world and recognize my existence within the infinite cosmos.
By doing this all things become positive negating the negative...

What is your "power fruit"? Or, perhaps, you are more of a vegetable person? "Power vegetables" matter, too.

The phrase favorite chore is an irritating oxymoron. I have to choose lawn mowing as I've been doing it since childhood and so it must be something like an old friend.

Have you watched SCTV?
Yes - I saw it way back in the "old days" when it was first out - even my parents got a kick out of it.

It you saw someone on the side of the street with a sign that said they were hungry, would you give them something (e.g. When you are stuck at a red light and they have you as a "captive audience")?
