Terry Pratchett. Brilliant. I just re-read Reaper Man

Yes, I am from Alabama. I have an affection for southern writers, I suppose. Yes, Welty is phenomenal. I do think you'd like A Redbird Christmas, and it's her shortest book. Hope you have a better night...
Yes, I bought Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter when it came out. One of my favorites. I have not read Smonk yet but loved his book of short stories called Poachers. Thanks for the suggestion. As a librarian I tried to read over a broad spectrum and discovered many great obscure writers this way...many of them from Alabama or Regional.Have you read Tom Franklin from Alabama? I wouldn't put him in the humor category except for one book he wrote called "Smonk." (violent and hilarious)
Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is a great book that everyone should read. (Not funny though - don't mean to hijack the thread but since Alabama writers came up, I did )
She's a good one - very edgy for her time. Not sure I'd call her comic relief, but she's fabulous.Depending upon how you define "humor," Flannery O'Connor can be a treasure.
Alabama, eh? I'm right above you in Tennessee.Yes, I am from Alabama. I have an affection for southern writers, I suppose. Yes, Welty is phenomenal. I do think you'd like A Redbird Christmas, and it's her shortest book. Hope you have a better night...
I have family in Elizabethton, TN. I've been all over the state. It is beautiful. Yeah, I hate those kind of days. The holidays can be a nice break, though. She's a good one - very edgy for her time. Not sure I'd call her comic relief, but she's fabulous.
Marian Keyes is great for British chic literature.

My day sucked so bad, didn't end until 10pm. I went straight to bed. Today has GOT to be better.
Yeah, that probably wouldn't be my cup of joe but I don't necessarily only read books like Lee Child, Tom Clancy, or Michael Connelly. I enjoy to hear what others are reading and why. Fannie Flagg and Adriana Trigiani are the only authors I've read that technically could be called chic lit, but I met each of them and enjoy the entire spectrum of Southern writers. These would probably only be funny to women, but I liked The Sweet Potato Queens when I read them years ago. There's a series although I haven't read the last one, Fat is the New 30.
It may have only been that they're coming from the Southern perspective but your mentioning Fannie Flagg is what made me think about The Sweet Potato Queens. I've read the Big Stone Gap series but no others by Adriana Trigiani yet. I didn't realize they'd made a movie about it until I just went to her web site to make sure she was the author I was thinking of.Yeah, that probably wouldn't be my cup of joe but I don't necessarily only read books like Lee Child, Tom Clancy, or Michael Connelly. Never heard of that writer...I'll have to Google it. Thanks for the suggestion.Irvine Welsh tears me up. Any chapter narrated by either Begbie or Spud.

Have been to Virginia to visit relatives there and was in Atlanta a couple years ago for the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County show. I have a cousin who's lived most of her life in North Carolina so she gives me the lowdown on her perspective of Southern living. Along with what I read here, that's been my primary exposure to the South.I love those girls - The Sweet Potato Queens. Have you ever made a visit to the South?
Well, someday, mayhap, you'll make it down here to visit the King and have some proper BBQ! I'll show you around!Have been to Virginia to visit relatives there and was in Atlanta a couple years ago for the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County show. Would love that! And you get the same offer for the northern King and proper seafood (unless you're one of those who doesn't like it).Well, someday, mayhap, you'll make it down here to visit the King and have some proper BBQ! I'll show you around!
